Coping with flashbacks

Often when we go through something terrifying or overwhelming, our bodies and minds block parts of it out to get through the moment. This is a survival strategy and is actually quite helpful at the time. But then the memories of the event can later come back up in the form of nightmares and flashbacks, bringing the terror back into your awareness.
