Session Rates & Insurance

I want to be sure that we are a good fit and that online counseling feels comfortable and appropriate for you and your unique needs.

An initial 15-minute consultation prior to starting counseling is free.

Other rates

  • $45 per 15-minute interval - any services requested beyond therapy sessions may have additional costs associated (ex: phone/crisis consultation, documentation like letters or reports, any collaboration with others that you may request, etc.). These tasks will be agreed upon in advance.

  • If you are planning to use insurance, your specific co-pay/coinsurance amount for online counseling will be discussed with you in advance of your first session.

  • If you are not planning to use insurance, under the "No Surprises Act," you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your care may cost. You can access that here.

Insurance Coverage

If you plan to use insurance, I am "in-network" with:

  • BCBS Blue Cross Blue Shield (except Blue Home/Local)

  • BCBSNC State Plan (educators & state employees)

  • Aetna

  • Anthem

  • Lyra

Counseling services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance or employee benefit plan (EAP benefits). Most plans cover online counseling by video and we will discuss your plan's coverage prior to starting therapy.

If you have insurance other than those listed above, your "Out of Network" benefits may be quite comparable to your in-network price. We can explore your plan specifics and I can provide you with a "superbill" to enable you to receive reimbursement from your insurance for sessions.

Please contact your insurance provider to verify your coverage for therapy. The phone number is usually on the back of your insurance card listed as "behavioral health" or "MH/SA."

The following questions are helpful to ask:

  • Do I have mental/behavioral health coverage?

  • Is online video counseling or "location code 02 for telehealth" covered in my plan?

  • What is my deductible and has it been met?

  • What is my co-pay and/or co-insurance amount?

  • Is therapist Heather McKenzie an "In-network provider"?

  • If no, do I have "Out-of Network" benefits?

  • How much will I be reimbursed if I see an "Out-of-Network" provider?

Reduced fee options

I do offer some reduced fee therapy spots, which are available on a limited basis, through the non-profit collective Open Path. Ask me more about this option if finances are currently a barrier for you.
